Something wicked this way comes
One middle-of-the-night in late September, I woke up in a cold sweat. The dream that had awoken me was uncommonly bad, featuring a serial killer chasing me and my friend Michael. I woke up with Michael’s words ringing in my ear: “Heather, I need your help.”
Imagine my surprise when I got a call first thing the next morning from, you guessed it, Michael. If you also guessed that he was calling to ask for my help, you’d be two-for-two. Michael, who is a very gifted energy worker and healer, had taken on a client who was convinced that she was being haunted by some insidious entity. He needed me to come in to assess the situation and the entity so that he could figure out how to proceed. I readily agreed, thinking what a kick-ass precognitive dream that must have been.
I had barely hung up the phone, when a nasty, dense vapor began to seep through my front door. This was the entity. I quickly began cobbling together every defensive energy trick I had ever learned in an effort to fend it off. Luckily, whatever I did worked. At that point, I began to suspect that there were some gaps in my psychic training.
A few days later, I arrived with Michael at his client’s home. Immediately, I knew that the “gaps” in my training were, in fact, chasms and that I was hopelessly in over my head. There was a dense, oppressive feeling to the home, even walking up to the front door. This was the entity’s home turf and power base; I was under-qualified to take on something so bad. But, nevertheless, this woman was absolutely desperate and in obvious physical pain. I was compelled to help her. And help her, I tried.
On all accounts, I did everything right. I rang sacred bells, I forced the entity from it’s comfort zone, I called down the Angels and I spoke with conviction. I even left the client feeling whole and resting comfortably after the session. But I had forgotten one thing – I didn’t protect myself. In the days that followed, I was completely bed-ridden. It took five days of bed rest and Kathleen‘s ministrations to set me straight. I had been attacked by the entity.
Angels and Demons
On my path to psychic development, I have learned from the best. The women I have chosen as my teachers and mentors are some of the most talented and gifted psychics, mediums and energy workers I’ve ever had the privilege to know. Julie, Leanne, Tami and Kathleen are in a class of their own. But for some reason, I had intentionally avoided talking about the “bad stuff”. Sure it’s out there, but I never thought I needed to protect myself (again with the hubris). Or maybe I just needed to learn the hard way. In any case, sometimes a client doesn’t have the wherewithal to fend off unhelpful entities, or may have called something pernicious into their midst unintentionally. Moreover, the nasty entity can see you as a threat and attack you if you’re unprepared (this did happen to me, but it is exceedingly rare).
But maybe you’re not a psychic or an energy worker but have something unfriendly in your home. Or you may know someone who seems be persistently “off” lately. You may not have the training or inclination to banish a negative entity, but you should be able to gauge the threat and protect yourself.
Shields up, Captain
Cheesy, yes. But this is exactly what you need to think about in terms of energetic protection. It’s just like Captain Picard (or Captain Kirk, if you prefer) ordering the shields raised in response to a Klingon threat. Not a Trekky? I forgive you. But there are loads of other useful imagery for you to pull from. But first, let’s talk about knowing when to shield yourself.
We encounter dozens, if not hundreds of other people every day and routinely engage in benign energy transfer. It’s part of being alive. Given this, you know when someone or something gives you the heebie-jeebies. They just don’t feel “right”, or a place may have “bad juju.” You know what I mean. More often then not, these places and individuals are pulling more energy from you than they are returning. And in some rare cases, they can be threatening to you. Depending on where you are, or who you’re with, this could range from merely being an annoyance to being much more serious. Whatever the case, when you encounter these situations, you’ll need to decide how serious something feels to you, and on what level you want to respond. This is an individual choice.
Now that you’ve gauged what constitutes a threat to you, you need to decide what to do about it. It’s best to do this for the first time when you feel at ease. The easiest thing to do is to think of something that symbolizes complete protection to you. It could be Captain Picard’s shields on the Enterprise, or Medieval armor, or Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, or whatever. It needs to be easily accessible to your conscious mind and represent complete protection. When you’ve decided what your totem will be, imagine it in its entirety. Think about how strong and impenetrable it is. Imagine it turning away unfriendly energy. Focus on that feeling of safety and know that as soon as you call this imagery to mind, you are completely protected.
That wasn’t too bad, was it? Now, this is just a basic shield. There are all kinds of other types of protection that I am, frankly, not qualified to teach you. An excellent resource is Michelle Belanger’s book, “The Ghost Hunter’s Survival Guide: Protection Techniques for Encounters With The Paranormal“. She gives all kinds of practical advice and techniques to help you learn psychic self-defense.
Whatever you choose to do, do it with conviction. And remember, sometimes a calculated retreat is the best course of action.
Love and light.
